Vybz Kartel Signs Shenequa as First Female Artist on His Label
Vybz Kartel is expanding his label operation with the signing of rising dancehall singer and songwriter Shenequa, marking the first time a female artist has officially joined his roster. The move gives Shenequa a major new platform while also showing how one of dancehall’s most influential names is continuing to build beyond his own releases.
The signing was reported by Kaboom Magazine and confirmed by Vybz Kartel, who said Shenequa is entering a new chapter and that his team intends to take her career to another level. He also teased the possibility of collaborations between the two artists. Shenequa is signed to GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik.
For an emerging artist, the value of a deal like this goes beyond the name attached to the contract. A developing act needs access to experienced creative direction, production, promotion, distribution, visual content and a network capable of turning individual releases into a sustained campaign. Kartel’s involvement can potentially give Shenequa access to those areas while allowing her to develop her own identity.
Shenequa is not entering the relationship without material of her own. Her latest single, “My Show,” arrived with a new visual that introduces audiences to her personality and sound. She also has “Emotionally Scarred” in her catalogue, giving the new label relationship a foundation to build from rather than starting with a completely blank slate.
Shenequa has described music as a form of personal expression, and that philosophy could become an important part of her branding. In an increasingly crowded digital music market, an artist cannot rely on a powerful association alone. The audience still needs a reason to connect with the individual performer, remember the music and follow the story from release to release.
Her comments about wanting to challenge the perception that female reggae and dancehall artists face limits also give the campaign a broader narrative. The signing can be positioned not simply as another roster addition, but as an opportunity to develop a female voice inside a label ecosystem strongly associated with one of dancehall’s biggest male stars.
From a marketing perspective, the next stage will be critical. The strongest rollout would balance Kartel’s star power with Shenequa’s own identity. A collaboration could generate immediate attention, but the long-term objective should be to make audiences recognize Shenequa without needing Kartel’s name in every headline. That means consistent visuals, short-form content, live appearances, interviews, playlist strategy and a release schedule that gives each song room to work.
The signing also highlights the continuing importance of artist development in dancehall. Streaming has lowered some barriers to entry, but visibility alone does not create a sustainable career. Artists still need teams that understand audience development, content production, release timing and how to convert attention into repeat listeners.
For Shenequa, being the first female artist signed to Vybz Kartel’s label gives her an immediate story. The challenge now is turning that story into a career. “My Show” can serve as an introduction, while future releases and any potential Kartel collaboration could provide additional peaks in attention. The most valuable outcome would be a recognizable Shenequa brand that can continue growing long after the initial signing announcement fades from the news cycle.
The move is significant on two levels. It gives an emerging Jamaican artist a major new opportunity, and it shows Vybz Kartel continuing to develop his influence through artist-building as well as performance. If the label can combine its existing cultural power with a thoughtful development strategy, Shenequa could become one of the more closely watched female names in the next phase of dancehall.
For Caribbean artists and independent teams watching the move, the lesson is straightforward: a strong partnership should be about more than access. The real value comes when a deal connects an artist with a clear identity, a capable team and a repeatable marketing system. Shenequa now has the opportunity to build exactly that.
